Parks & Rec Offering Free Trees for Arbor Day

The City of Baytown Parks & Recreation Department will celebrate Arbor Day with a free tree giveaway, Friday, April 27, at Town Square (213 West Texas Avenue).  Trees will be given to the public from 9 am – 3 pm to encourage the restoration of the natural canopy over the city.  Restoration of natural trees is a key component to enhancing- and beautifying the appearance of our -community, especially following one of the worst droughts in recent history.

“We have over 1,300 Live Oak, White Ash, Cedar Elm, Sweet Gum, Sycamore, Loblolly Pine, Yaupon, Bald Cypress, Pecan, Bur Oak, Water Oak, and a limited number of Texas Avenue Live Oaks” ranging from one gallon to five gallon size trees” said Scott Johnson, Director of Parks and Recreation.  “These trees, if planted and nurtured, can make a huge difference in our community.”

The trees were either grown from seed at the Parks and Recreation Department's tree farm or donated seedlings from the Apache Corporation.  Trees will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last, with a two-tree limit.

Arbor Day marks the 146th anniversary of the tree planters' holiday.  Arbor Day is celebrated in all 50 states and in many countries around the world.  Tree planting and environmental stewardship are encouraged through the Arbor Day celebrations.
