Clear Overdue Library Fines with Food for Fines

Sterling Municipal Library’s summer reading program is fast approaching, and library staff wants Baytown to read as many books as possible this summer. One common road-block to summer reading is overdue fines. If you find that you owe any late fees on library materials, SML is offering you the chance to get your account back in good standing with Food for Fines, a food drive where cardholders can donate food in exchange for forgiving overdue fines.

Some families may owe too many overdue fines at Sterling Municipal Library, preventing them from checking out any items. “We want children to find their next favorite book this summer,” says Children’s Librarian Chazley Dotson. “We don’t want overdue fines to get in the way of that.” If you are a library lover who owes too many overdue fines, now is your chance to get your account cleared up just in time for “Laugh Out Loud at the Library,” Sterling Library’s summer reading program beginning June 1.

Cardholders can donate one non-perishable food item for every dollar they owe in overdue fines. Food for Fines cannot be applied to replacement costs of materials. All donations will go to Love Network of Baytown and dispersed to local food pantries. Food items should be in good condition, and not expire in the next six months.

For more information about Food for Fines, call 281-427-7331. Food for Fines runs May 1-31 at Sterling Municipal Library, 1 Wilbanks Ave, Baytown.
