Job Summary and Principal Duties

Application Period: Monday, August 25, 2008 – Friday, September 26, 2008

Duration of Eligibility List: 10/13/2008 to 10/13/2009 Unless Exhausted

 

Principal duties and responsibilities of a City of Baytown Patrol Officer: Protects life and property. Investigates and reports criminal offenses. Preserves order and peace. Identifies and brings to justice violators to ensure safe and expedient motor vehicle movement through traffic enforcement, accident investigation and care of the injured. All qualified candidates will be required to submit to a polygraph examination, appear before an oral interview board, as well as undergo a psychological examination, physical examination and drug screen. An in-depth background check will be conducted on successful candidates.

An applicant must be at least 21 years of age and less than 45 years of age at the time of the entrance examination (or, if certified, at the time of appointment as a patrol officer). A person who is 45 years of age, or older, may not be eligible for a beginning position as a Patrol Officer.

An applicant must possess one (1) of the following qualifications and possess a high school diploma/GED:

1. An active Texas peace officer’s license, with less than a two year break in service prior to taking the entrance examination; OR

2. Has successfully completed a Basic Peace Officer’s course and is eligible for licensing at the time of the entrance examination; OR

3. Successfully completed a minimum of 45 hours at an accredited college or university with at least a 2.0 grade average on a 4.0 scale; OR

4. 24 months active military service with an honorable discharge.

An applicant must also:

1. Be a United States citizen and be of good moral character.

2. Be able to read and write English.

3. Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.

4. Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor offense above the grade of a Class C within the last 10 years.

5. Meet all other qualifications established by Chapter 143 of the Local Government Code.

6. The applicant must not have been convicted or has ever been on court-ordered community supervision, probation, or deferred adjudication for any criminal offense of the grade of a Class B misdemeanor within the last 10 years from the date of the court order.

7. The applicant must not have been convicted or has ever been on court-ordered community supervision, probation, or deferred adjudication for any criminal offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor.

8. The applicant must not be currently under indictment of any criminal offense.

9. The applicant must not have ever been convicted of any family violence.

10. The applicant must not ever have been convicted at any time of a State jail felony or felony offense.

11. The applicant must possess a valid Texas Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. A valid Texas Driver’s license must be obtained prior to appointment.
