All lifeguards at Pirates Bay and Calypso Cove must be American Red Cross Certified Lifeguards. We offer a free lifeguard class to potential team members. Theses classes are typically held from February through June. To enroll in the lifeguard training course, you must first complete an application through our Human Resources department at by clicking here. Following a successful submission of your application, you will be scheduled for a swim assessment. The swim assessment is done at the Sterling High School Natatorium. The skills that must be performed consist of:
1) Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breast stroke or a combination of both. Swimming on back or side is not allowed.
2) Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
3) Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breast stroke, make a surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 lb object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Note: the participant must hold the object with both hands, placing the object on his or her chest, and must keep his or her face above the water.
Following successful completion of the swim assessment, lifeguard candidates will then complete a lifeguard training course. The course is offered on either Mon & Wed or Tues & Thurs at Pirates Bay and all classes must complete a Sat & Sun in water skills class.
