Baytown Greener Due to Recycling Program

May 29, 2009

The City of Baytown is greener than it was just this time last year, thanks to its curbside recycling program. Approximately 1,085 tons of recyclable materials have been diverted from the landfill. This is an average of 98.64 tons per month in the 11 months that the program has been in effect.

Mayor DonCarlos was pleased at hearing the report of the success of the program. “The initial participation rate is better than we anticipated.” DonCarlos said. “Our citizens have proven that they are ready for our City to be cleaner, more environmentally friendly, and cost conscious. I encourage everyone to ask their neighbors to help us recycle and clean up Baytown.”

According to Waste Management of Texas, Inc., the company who operates the program; Baytown’s “set-out rate,” or the percentage of households who recycle, is approximately 42 – 46%. This set-out rate is 10-16% higher than most area cities that have curbside pickup.

“Baytown residents should be proud of themselves,” said City Manager Garry Brumback. “They’ve embraced the recycling program and should be commended for its success.” Brumback added that he hopes residents will continue to utilize the service and that those who have yet to participate will see the benefits to the community and start recycling in their homes.

The City of Baytown began curbside recycling in June of 2008. Residents living in single family and duplex residences participate by recycling newspapers, aluminum and metal cans, and #1 and #2 plastic bags/containers.
