The City of Baytown continues to monitor hurricane Gustav. The official track forecast currently keeps our area out of hurricane force winds or storm surge. We strongly recommend that residents who live in mobile or manufactured homes or who live in an area which floods in heavy rainfall, should seek shelter with friends or family in a stronger structure and out of flood-prone areas. No hurricane shelters will be opened in Baytown. The City does not provide sandbags. Some easy alternatives include: heavy-duty trash bags with 1 - 2 shovels of sand or medium-sized (10 - 20 lb) bags of potting soil, topsoil, compost, etc. Each are readily available, fairly easy to carry, relatively inexpensive, and can be used to cleanup, repair, or enhance your yard after the storm has passed. Residents are reminded to make their Hurricane Kit purchases today while food, fuel, and other supplies are available. Evacuees from Louisiana, Beaumont and Port Arthur are arriving in our area. Remember, in order to register yourself or loved ones needing evacuation assistance, you must call 2-1-1. Finally, continue to monitor the weather for the latest information on Hurricane Gustav, Tropical Storm Hanna, and any other storms which may form.
