Taking the Hazards Out of Your House

April 22, 2009

The City of Baytown Health Department will co-sponsor a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day with Harris County and Harris County Precinct 2. Baytown’s event is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 8 am to 2 pm, at the City of Baytown Storage Facility, 1200 Lee Drive (corner of Lee Drive and Riggs Street).

This special event will give residents an opportunity to clean out their garages and help the environment at the same time. By bringing unwanted, hard to dispose of, and out-of-date household hazardous products to the event, citizens ensure the items will be properly disposed. In addition, participants will receive information on less toxic alternatives to common household hazardous products and can also “shop” for FREE items at the Reusable Products Booth.

What to bring? The following items will be accepted:

Hazardous Waste: paint products, pesticides, fertilizers, motor oil & filers, antifreeze, gasoline & fuels, household cleaners, solvents, car batteries, and pool chemicals.

Recyclables: newspaper, white paper, magazines, cardboard, phone books, Ni-Cad batteries, printer cartridges, and automobile tires (limit of 5 tires per household).

Electronic Waste: televisions, computer monitors, laptop computers, CPUs, printers, scanners, fax machines, telephones, stereos, and VCR & DVD players.

What Not to Bring? The following items will NOT be accepted: business waste, medical waste, radioactive waste, PCBs, dioxins, ammunitions, explosives, compressed gas cylinders, smoke detectors, washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, brush, or general household trash.

Safety Tips for Transporting Materials to Collection Site.

· Bring household hazardous products in their original containers, if possible, and do NOT mix products.

· Make sure containers are properly sealed and labeled correctly.

· If the container leaks, pack it in a larger container and use absorbents, such as cat litter, to soak up leaks.

· If you do not know what a particular product is, mark it as “UNKNOWN.”

· If possible, place all household hazardous materials in cardboard boxes.

· Place all household hazardous materials in vehicle areas away from drivers and passengers.

Residents are encouraged to show their support for the cleanup of Baytown and the protection of our environment, by participating in the proper disposal and recycling of household hazardous waste items.
