Looking for hobby for you or the kids, a chance to exercise and learn something new, or just to participate in a confidence and discipline-boosting martial arts activity? The City’s Parks and Recreation Department is now offering Shito-Ryu classes Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings (6 p.m. – 7 p.m.), at the Baytown Community Center, 2407 Market Street. The four-week class begins June 8.
Shito-Ryu is one of the major karate systems of Japan proper (the Japanese islands excluding Okinawa), and is an excellent form of martial art study for both newcomers and more experienced students. The class is taught by Mr. Edgar Valdes, a nationally recognized Shito-Ryu instructor. Participants will learn self defense as well as basic Japanese, as the class uses traditional Japanese terminology and phrases.
Cost per student is $40 per four-week session. Uniforms are required and may be purchased during class for $30. Space is limited, so pre-registration is recommended. Children ages 6 and older are welcome.
