Baytown Wetlands Center Seeking Volunteers to Make a Splash

July 31, 2009

Area residents can “make a splash” in the community by volunteering at the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education and Recreation Center in Baytown. Volunteer Orientation/Basic Training will be held Thursday, August 27 at the Wetlands Center, located at 1724 Market Street.

For those who enjoy working with children and like to teach others about critical environmental issues, this nationally recognized, award-winning environmental education program is the perfect place to make a difference in the community and meet other volunteers with similar interests.

All Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District (GCCISD) fifth and seventh graders visit the Wetlands Center for a day during the school year. Each fifth-grade student participates in the ExxonMobil Wetlands Ecology program and the Bayer Making Science Make Sense program. The Wetlands Center also offers the Rotary Club of Baytown Liquid Science program for all GCCISD seventh graders. Volunteers are needed to teach and assist with these programs. Previous teaching experience is not required. All basic information for each program will be provided. Other volunteer duties such as clerical, carpentry or animal care at the Wetlands Center do not require further formal training.

The Center’s volunteer training will consist of a morning orientation session (9 am – noon), which will cover the mission, history, facilities and future of the center. Prospective volunteers will learn about the center’s programs and the type of help needed. After a lunch break, participants who wish to work in the Wetlands Center’s environmental education programs will attend the Basic Training session (1 - 4 pm). Additional training involves pairing individuals with experienced volunteers during the upcoming classes to take place in September at the Wetlands Center.

For more information, to register, or to request a Volunteer Opportunities brochure contact Outreach/Volunteer Coordinator Mary Alice Trumble, at 281-420-7128, or by email to MaryAlice.Trumble@baytown.org. The deadline to register for the orientation/training session is Thursday, August 20.
