Shito Ryu Karate
Category:  All
Have you or your children wanted to learn martial arts but just never knew where to take lessons or what style to learn? The City of Baytown is offering Shito-Ryu, one of the major karate systems of Japan proper (the Japanese islands excluding Okinawa). Come pick up an exciting new hobby where you can learn self-discipline and pick-up skills that allows you and your children to feel safe no matter where you are!

Baytown Parks & Recreation is offering a Shito-Ryu karate, classes beginning July 6th, at the Baytown Community Center, 2407 Market Street. The class is held on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at the Baytown Community Center. Cost per student is $40 per session, sessions last 4 weeks. Uniforms are required and may be purchased during class for $30.

This class is open to both newcomers, and to more experienced students. Our instructor, Mr. Edgar Valdez, is a nationally recognized instructor of Shito-Ryu. Not only are you going to learn a great self defense art but you will be learning basic Japanese as you will be using traditional Japanese calls. Space is limited, so pre-registration is recommended

Ballet

Category: Youth
Pre-Ballet is for children that are starting dance for the first time. This class provides a bridge between Creative Dance and the first level of ballet in which participants will be introduced to the structure and discipline of a ballet class, as well as music awareness and basic terminology emphasizing movements to music.
Ballet is carefully choreographed, with graceful, flowing, precise movements, and its ethereal qualities will help develop body strength, flexibility, focus and self discipline.

Ballet se encarga de la coreografia cuidadosamente cual constiste en la gracia, el fluir, movimientos exactos y sus cualidades etereas ayudaran a desarrollar la fuerza, la fexibilidad, el enfocarse y la autodisciplina del cuerpo ye de la mente.

Beginner and Intermediate Ballroom Dance

Do you wish you could ballroom dance like the stars? You can make that dream come true. The Baytown Parks & Recreation department has Latin Ballroom and American Ballroom dancing lessons for beginners and intermediates. If you always wanted to learn how to ballroom dance but never knew where to start, this is the right place for you. This class will have you out on the floor and ballroom dancing in no time.

Country and Western Dance Lessons

Dust off those boots and hat and get ready to boogie. If you have ever been wanting to learn the right way to C&W dance, then now is your time. Professional instruction by one of Baytown's own who trains competitive dancers as well as beginners is just around the corner.

Belly Dancing Seminar
Category: Adult

Bored with aerobics, tired of “taebo,” or are you just looking for something fun and different to do? The Baytown Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for their popular belly dance class, scheduled for Saturday, May 9, from 10 am – Noon, at the Baytown Community Center, 2407 Market Street.

There is no need to feel shy in this class – you’ll learn the basics of belly dance in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, then dazzle your friends and family members as you “shimmy” onto the dance floor or into the living room. Participants should wear comfortable workout clothes (not too baggy), and a lightweight scarf, shawl or shoulder wrap is recommended.

Due to the popularity of this class, pre-registration is required. Course space is limited, so registration is on a first come-first served basis.

Youth Sports & Fitness

Sk8 Don't Spect8

Do you have dreams of winning X-Games gold? Have you always wanted to learn to skateboard but never knew where? Well then Baytown is your place! Skateboarding is easy with practice and lessons. Novice skateboarders will learn the basics of skateboarding to include safety, balance & control. Skaters will be introduced to everything they need to know to be safe and enjoy this sport! Free classes on the last Saturday of each month.

Sessions: First and Second Saturday of each month

Required Equipment: Skateboard, helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, & soccer shin guards.

Fit Kids
Category: Youth
Tired of having the kids lounging around complaining about how they have nothing to do? Maybe you just want your kid(s) to be more active. Introduce them into a world of fitness with this fun course. They will build character while walking for fitness and doing other basic exercises and games. Everyone will be taught the importance of staying in shape and eating healthy all while having fun exploring the many trails and pathways in Baytown. Prizes will be given out for completion of milestones.

Educational

Baytown Planeteers

Category: All
Be a part of the solution while learning to be less of the problem! The Baytown Planeteers is an eco-friendly group that helps keep Baytown beautiful. We will learn about our local eco-system and the dangers of pollution at the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center. The group will do community projects around Baytown from cleaning up trails and parks to Storm Drain marking and education. On the second Saturday of each month, we will have a clean up followed by a cook out to enjoy the Parks & Facilities around the city.

When: 2nd & 3rd Saturday of each month

We Care Mentoring
Category: Youth
Are your kids having trouble getting through their daily routine? Maybe they are just stuck in a rut. Sign them up for our mentoring class where they will learn life skills. This program will teach them time management, how to set and acheive personal goals, good personal hygeine, along with financial tips that will establish good spending and saving habits. On top of this they will be able to get help with their school work and play games that will guarantee a great time. REGISTRATIONS ARE FIRST COME FIRST SERVED AND PRE-REGISTRATION IS NECESSARY.

Fun

Bucket List Club
Category: All
Could've, should've, would've! Are you one of those people afraid to take chances? Are there things that you've wanted to do but you can not find people to do them with you? Come by and visit with the Bucket List Club. We will go on adventures ranging from things as simple as visiting the zoo, going to a sporting event, or visiting the theatre all the way to the extremes of sky diving, white water rafting, and heading to Louisiana to try our luck at gambling. The club will meet and decide on activities to do as a group.

Messy Mitts
Category: Youth
Come for a fun-filled morning with your child and enjoy hands-on entertainment. You and your child will experience such things as popular finger painting with puddin’, dirt diggin’, water play and other fun activities. Everyone will have an awesome time! Visit with other parents and let your child have fun making a mess without all the fuss.

Tyke Hike
Category: Youth
Bring the kids and come hike at the nature center. Pre-schoolers and their parents will explore the grounds, learn about wildlife and enjoy hands-on nature activities. From puppets to story-telling to getting up-close and personal with live animals, the kids will learn about insects, spiders, birds, crabs, snakes, alligators and wildflowers. The nature center serves as the perfect venue to introduce young children to the wonders of nature.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Category:  Youth
Does your daughter like to dance, sing and act? The City of Baytown has the perfect summer camp for young ladies interested in the performing arts- “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” This two-week camp, which kicks off July 13, offers participants the chance to take part in acting, arts & crafts, singing and many other activities all while learning skills that will stay with them for life.

The camp, offered to 20 girls, ages 9-13, will meet at the Baytown Community Center, 2407 Market Street, Monday – Friday, from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., with extended hours and tutoring available. Cost for the camp is $80 for one week; or $140 for two weeks, with a discount offered to families enrolling multiple children. Space is limited, so pre-registration is recommended.
