Saturday, January 5, 2019:
Baytown Nature Center’s monthly family program, Nurture Nature Series welcomes a new event on January 5, 2019. The first offering of the new year is “BioBlitz,” an event focused on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. The nature center’s blitz begins at 10 am and lasts until noon at 6213 Bayway Drive.
At a BioBlitz, scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to get an overall count of the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms that inhabit a particular place. It's as easy as taking photos of the plants and animals you see and loading them into iNaturalist, which provides a place to record observations and get help with species identification from scientists. It is advised that the iNaturalist app be downloaded onto your phone or tablet before taking part in the program. Using iNaturalist encourages public participation, creates high quality date that contributes to science, and makes tallying your species count easy.
The family-oriented series, offered the first Saturday of each month, except April, is free with regular admission to the nature center. Enjoy a fun, educational morning, then stay to picnic, bird, hike, fish or just relax - a great way to spend a morning. Adult admission (13+) is $4 and children 5-12 and seniors 65+ are only $1. Meet at the Visitor Center. If in doubt about the weather, phone 281-424-9198 or check the nature center’s Facebook page. For more information contact Crissy Butcher at 281-420-7130.
