Garth Road Widening Project
The Garth Road Widening Project includes reconstructing and widening the existing Garth Road roadway from four to six lanes from I-10 to Baker Road.
WHY is the project needed: The purpose of the proposed project is to facilitate mobility for anticipated population growth in Harris County and enhance safety for the traveling public by adding travel lanes to increase capacity.
HOW LONG will the project take: The project is anticipated to be completed in six phases (Phases A-F) over an approximate eight-year timeframe.
WHAT are the project improvements exactly:
Planned improvements include:
- Three 11-foot travel lanes in each direction
- A 16-foot noncontinuous raised median
- A 6.5-foot sidewalk on one side of the roadway
- A 10-foot shared-use path on the opposite side
- Right-turn lanes at select locations
Improvements from Baker Road to SH 146 include the construction of raised medians and pedestrian/bicycle accommodations. Additional safety features include adding a shared use path and adding raised medians with dedicated left turn lanes at selected intersections.
Progress Update
Construction crews will continue to make progress with the relocation of utilities on Garth Road, from I-10 to Archer Road starting January 2026.
March 1, 2026:
Temporary lane closures will be in place on the outer lanes of Garth Road at Independence Boulevard in both directions and the outer lanes north of W. Archer Road until 4:00 PM.
Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible.
Utility and Wastewater Relocation
In addition to utility relocations, wastewater lines will also be relocated and upgraded to support long-term infrastructure needs associated with the project.
Road Widening Plan
Following the completion of utility and wastewater relocation activities, roadway widening efforts will begin along Garth Road between I-10 and Archer Road. This phase of work is anticipated to occur in February 2026.
Lane Closures
Occasional lane closures will be in place to facilitate a smooth and safe construction zone.
Scheduled Water Shutoffs
Temporary water service interruptions may be necessary as crews complete water and sanitary line improvements. Impacted residents and businesses will be notified in advance when scheduled work is planned.
