The Baytown Fire Department proudly recognizes Captain Tracy Lindsey for an incredible 32 years of service as he enters retirement. As the longest-tenured captain at the time of his retirement and one of the most respected leaders, Captain Lindsey leaves behind a legacy of excellence, mentorship, and dedication to our department and community.
Captain Lindsey began his career with the City of Baytown Fire Department in August 1993. Prior to his employment with the city, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1987 to 1993. During his military service, he played vital roles aboard the USCG Cutter Dogwood, USCG Cutter Dependable, Station Petaluma (California), and USCG Station Galveston. His contributions earned him multiple Meritorious Unit Citations and the National Defense Service Medal during the Persian Gulf War. His commitment to growth and preparedness was evident early in his career when he completed Maritime Firefighting training in Toledo, Ohio, laying a strong foundation for his future in the fire service.
To further prepare himself for his new career path, Captain Lindsey completed fire school and EMT-Basic training at the College of the Mainland. He began his journey in the Baytown Fire Department as a firefighter, with assignments at Stations 2 and 4. In 2001, he was promoted to Equipment Operator, permanently assigned to Station 2. Just four years later, in 2005, he was promoted to Lieutenant on B Shift - a position that has since been reclassified as Captain - and served at Station 2 until his retirement.
Throughout his career, Captain Lindsey earned multiple professional certifications including Instructor I, Fire Officer I, Advanced Firefighter, and Advanced Marine Firefighter. He was also a member of the Baytown Professional Firefighters Local 1173 Honor Guard, serving for more than 10 years.
Captain Lindsey was activated for service during major disaster events including Hurricane Ike in 2008 and Hurricane Harvey in 2017. He also played a key role in the 2014 fishing boat rescue in Tabbs Bay, where a multi-agency team worked to free a trapped woman from a capsized vessel’s engine room. Captain Lindsey’s presence during these critical incidents demonstrated both his steady leadership and calm under pressure.
A defining moment of his career came when he oversaw the design, construction, and delivery of Baytown Fire Department’s first fire boat, Marine 2. This project required incredible attention to detail, and his commitment to seeing it through marked a significant achievement in the department’s marine operations.
One of his most memorable, and unexpected, moments occurred in September 2013, when he and his crew responded to a vehicle fire, only to discover the vehicle’s owner was Joseph P. Kerwin, a NASA astronaut from the Skylab 2 mission. The encounter led to a heartfelt gesture, as the crew later received an autographed book signed by all three Skylab astronauts.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Captain Lindsey is a dedicated family man. He finds his greatest joy in spending time with his two daughters and five grandchildren, and enjoys the outdoors and everything involving motorcycles.
As Captain Lindsey begins his next chapter, we thank him for over three decades of service, sacrifice, and leadership. His influence will be felt in our department for years to come.
From all of us at the Baytown Fire Department:
Thank you, Captain Tracy Lindsey. We wish you all the best in retirement. You’ve earned it.
