An Interview Before July 3rd Concert

The love will be flowing in Baytown on July 3rd courtesy of The Bellamy Brothers, who are headlining night one of the City’s two-day Independence Day Celebration.

David and his brother Howard have been active musicians since 1968, but several songs like “Let Your Love Flow” made the duo popular worldwide in the 1970’s. Now, 56 years later, the guys are still having fun.

David said, “We thought about retiring about 10 years ago and if we sit at home too long, we get kind of bored, so we just keep doing it. I didn’t think people were going to keep hiring us to play music into our 70’s, but it’s a great compliment and I think our band sounds better than we’ve ever sounded.”

While the country music legends are from Florida, Texas is a special place to play for them, especially the Houston area.

David jokingly said, “I think Howard has a couple of ex-wives there, but you know we have nothing but fond memories of that area. A lot of people think we’re Texans, but I tell everybody that I’m not from Texas, but my wife is and has a Texas flag hanging in our hallway. When I come downstairs from the bedroom every morning, she thinks I’m supposed to salute it.”

The Bellamy Brothers are bringing their music and jokes to Bicentennial Park in order to celebrate Independence Day, something that’s important to the band.

“This holiday has always been a big part of our touring schedule and it’s something we never forget about. We usually make a little video for our social media, draping ourselves with the flag to tell people to get out there and support our country and do it the American way,” David said.

jjg_6449test_fbSeveral generations have grown up to songs like “Redneck Girl,” “Old Hippie,” “For All the Wrong Reasons,” and the one known for the famous flirty phrase “If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me.” David says it’s a great sight to see fans young and young at heart enjoy their shows.

“You’ll get three or four generations of families coming out to see the show and you see little ones singing along with the words of a song that came out 40 years ago. You know they must play that song a lot around the house,” he said.

So, what can fans expect?

David said, “We try to work in as many of the hits as we can. Everybody’s got a favorite which is a good problem to have. What we want from the fans is for them just to have a good time. It’s Texas so you know somebody’s going to be dancing.”

This won’t be the last you hear from the Bellamy Brothers because they have a new song and video that was released this week called “Crawl in a Hole.”

David said, “We shot this video partly at our Florida ranch, partly in Roswell, New Mexico, and partly in Canada.”

“Some have said it sounds like a prepper song, but it’s more like us laughing at the inevitable,” he added.

But the hope is that you will crawl out of your hole to see Baytown’s July 3rd and 4th Celebration. Make sure to come out and see Kashus Culpepper, who just signed a major record deal, the Bellamy Brothers, Tiera Kennedy, Niko Moon, July 4th headliner Brett Young, and the best fireworks show in the gulf coast area.
