Family, friends, and City of Baytown staff gathered at the Baytown Community Center to celebrate the official swearing-in new Mayor Charles Johnson.
Former Mayors Stephen DonCarlos and Calvin Mundinger joined outgoing Mayor Brandon Capetillo, and Goose Creek CISD Superintendent Dr. Randal O’Brien were among those who congratulated Mayor Johnson as he begins this new chapter.
Dr. O’Brien and Mr. Mundinger spoke highly of Mayor Johnson’s work ethic and his dedication to his family, highlighting the contributions of several members of the Johnson family to the Baytown community.
When it was time for Mayor Johnson to speak, he stood before the packed room with emotion. “What you see in front of you is the answer to your prayers,” he said. “This means a lot to me that it means a lot to you.”
For Mayor Johnson, a lifelong dream became reality when he took the oath of office. Born in McNair and raised in Baytown, he recalled a moment when he was young: “I remember saying to myself ‘I don’t know how. I don’t know when, but I’m going to be the Mayor of Baytown,’” he said.
Mayor Johnson, who previously served as a councilmember for District 3, expressed heartfelt gratitude to his wife, children, parents, brothers, and friends who supported him on his journey. However, he made it clear that the real work starts now.
He said, “I wanted to be mayor because I wanted to make a positive change. Now it’s time for the community to pull in the same direction.”
Mayor Johnson wasted no time, leaving the celebration to preside over his first City Council meeting as mayor.
Congratulations to Mayor Johnson as he begins this inspiring new chapter. Together, we look forward to building a better Baytown.
