Staying Safe in this Texas Heat

Heat Safety StoryStaying Safe in the Heat

Mother Nature forgot to turn off the blow dryer. The heat is on and with limited chances of relief in sight, we want to make sure you’re being safe while out in the heat.

Temperatures have been at or above triple digits for so many days, it’s important to keep these tips in mind:

  • Limit outdoor activities
  • Take frequent breaks if working outside
  • Drink plenty of water and include drinks with electrolytes
  • Wear light clothing
  • Keep pets hydrated and make sure they have shaded areas when outside
  • Check on family and friends
  • Work early or late in the day

City of Baytown employees who spend their days outside are following these instructions. In fact, our teams are working earlier shifts in order to avoid the hottest part of the day as much as possible.

Other Cooling Options

The City does not have cooling centers open at this time. Those open when the National Weather Service issues an Excessive Heat Warning that lasts three days or longer.

If you need a place to cool off, you can find alternate places like your favorite shopping center or grocery store. You can also visit the City of Baytown’s public facilities, like the Sterling Library and Community Center, during normal business hours.

Make sure you know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone who is overcome by the heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Don’t wait and call 9-1-1.

We hope Mother Nature will calm down soon, but until then be safe outdoors. For more heat safety tips and resources, click this link.
