City of Baytown Opens Cooling Center

Posted on August 23, 2023 at 9:43 AM by Trisa Parker

The City of Baytown is taking steps to help everyone stay cool, while encouraging everyone to be safe outside in these extremely hot temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for a third day in a row, meeting the requirements for the City to activate a cooling center at the Sterling Municipal Library over the weekend.

The library will be open this weekend on Saturday from 10am-5pm and on Sunday from 1pm-5pm. The same library rules apply and you are asked not to bring your pets. If you are looking for other options to cool off, you can visit places like your favorite shopping center or grocery store.

Temperatures have been at or above triple digits for so many days, it’s important to keep these tips in mind:

  • Limit outdoor activities
  • Take frequent breaks if working outside
  • Drink plenty of water and include drinks with electrolytes
  • Wear light clothing
  • Keep pets hydrated and make sure they have shaded areas when outside
  • Check on family and friends
  • Work early or late in the day

Make sure you know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone who is overcome by the heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Don’t wait to call 9-1-1. For more heat safety tips and resources, click this link.

The City will continue to monitor the forecast and will open up additional cooling centers if needed. Look for more updates on our social media channels and baytown.org.
